At the Aero in Santa Monica on Saturday, January 31.
So far I've yet to check off anything on my To Do List, but during Nicki's visit this weekend, we managed to discover LAMILL in Silverlake and dine with Amy at The Chamberlain in West Hollywood. I also discovered a slim volume about a literal vixen, Lady into Fox, which has proved to be fascinating and thought-provoking, to say the least.
"Fine talk was as rare as it was refreshing--the gift of the god's themselves, the one starry spangle on the ragged cloak of humanity." --Henry James, "The Coxon Fund"
I was thrilled to receive an email yesterday notifying me that my talented friend Danielle had made a donation (in honor of my upcoming birthday) to the Literary Network of Greater Los Angeles. In turn, I just made a donation to Women for Women International in honor of Sara Woster, artist and fellow May Queen contributor, who is painting to raise funds for the support and education of women in the Congo. Yes, we can!
Just purchased at Skylight Books on Vermont: Praise by Robert Hass
I.
We asked the captain what course
of action he proposed to take toward
a beast so large, terrifying, and
unpredictable. He hesitated to
answer, and then said judiciously:
"I think I shall praise it."
This coming Tuesday Canteen launches their eagerly anticipated third issue, featuring Benjamin Kunkel, Lee Klein, Porochista Khakpour, and Canteen founder Sean Finney. A $10 donation at the door gets you the latest issue, cocktails, snacks, and music by DJ Duke of Windsor. That's bang for your buck and it supports a fantastic venture. We need more great lit mags. Unfortunately I won't be in San Francisco for the party, but please tell me all about it. I hate to miss a thing!
WHEN:
Tuesday, September 9
7-10 p.m.
WHERE:
Root Division gallery
3175 17th Street (at South Van Ness Ave.)
PS: Don't be too fashionably late--the Canteen events tend to draw quite a crowd of writers, readers, and other bright young things.
In the last few days, people have found my blog whilst searching for:
Marie Antoinette inspired living
Pics of Charlotte Gainsbourg
Edwardian corsets
Byron and Shelley fashion
PS: Last week Amy and I had afternoon tea at Gordon Ramsey's in The London and drinks at the Art Deco supper club Foxtail, both in West Hollywood. My cocktail of choice was the Poisoned Rose [pdf]. In one week I will be packing my bags and moving back to Los Angeles for the foreseeable future. I'm looking forward to reading Chandler at the laundromat, Hollywood Forever cemetery screenings, etc.
